Talking and Listening

Description of activity

Students plan, write and deliver a two-minute oral discussion on a topic of their choice.

Suggested materials

Palm cards or speech notes

Prior learning

The students have listened to and expressed points of view with justification about familiar and unfamiliar researched topics. They have jointly and independently constructed discussions that are well supported by arguments.

Outcomes

Talking and Listening (TS3.1)
Communicates effectively for a range of purposes and with a variety of audiences to express well-developed, well-organised ideas dealing with more challenging topics.
Writing (WS3.9)
Produces a wide range of well-structured and well-presented literary and factual texts for a wide variety of purposes and audiences using increasingly challenging topics, ideas, issues and written language features.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • justify a point of view with supporting evidence
  • use persuasive language
  • use appropriate language features and conventions for an oral discussion.
