Description of activity
Students plan, draft and deliver an oral presentation on a novel of their own choosing.
Suggested materials
Palm cards or speech notes
Prior learning
The students have jointly and independently constructed detailed spoken and written reviews that include book knowledge, summary of events, character assessment and recommendation for particular audiences.
Outcomes
Talking and Listening (TS3.1)
Communicates effectively for a range of purposes and with a variety of audience to express well-developed, well-organised ideas dealing with more challenging topics.
Reading and Viewing Texts (RS3.5)
Reads independently an extensive range of texts with increasing content demands and responds to themes and issues.
Context and Text (RS3.7)
Critically analyses techniques used by writers to create certain effects, to use language creatively, to position the reader in various ways and to construct different interpretations of experience.
Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- structure and present a book review in oral form
- use appropriate language features and conventions for an oral task
- identify and interpret ideas, themes and issues in literary texts.
