Description of Activity

Students write a letter to a friend who has been absent from school. In the letter they discuss the topic they have been studying in class. Students also explain in the letter how studying the chosen text and other material helped in understanding the topic.

Context

Students have been undertaking a topic study on personal choices or community. During this unit of work they have studied a text and other material related to the set topic. Students have produced several pieces of writing and have an understanding of the purpose, language features and structures of a variety of texts, including recounts. They are familiar with the structure and language features of formal and informal letters.

Outcomes

A student:

1 responds to and composes increasingly sophisticated and sustained texts for understanding, interpretation, critical analysis and pleasure

4 selects and uses language forms and features, and structures of texts according to different purposes, audiences and contexts, and describes and explains their effects on meaning

5 transfers understanding of language concepts into new and different contexts

7 thinks critically and interpretively using information, ideas and increasingly complex arguments to respond to and compose texts in a range of contexts

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of themes, ideas and concepts in texts and how they are relevant to other audiences and contexts
  • discuss the merit and appropriateness of the chosen text and supporting material
  • write a well-reasoned argument using appropriate language forms and features with supporting evidence in letter format
  • demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between audience, purpose, language choices and form.
