Description of activity
Students listen to the reading of a fairytale picture book such as The Little Red Hen or The Gingerbread Man. They discuss the events and illustrations in the book. Students provide a written or oral recount of part of the story.
Suggested materials
Fairytale picture books, paper and pencils (optional).
Prior learning
Students have read simple literary and non-literary texts. They have listened to the teacher reading picture books and discussed them as a class. Students have jointly and independently constructed oral and written recounts.
Outcomes
Talking and Listening (TES1.1)
Communicates with peers and known adults in informal situations and structured activities dealing briefly with familiar topics.
Skills and Strategies (TES1.2)
Demonstrates basic skills of classroom and group interaction, makes brief oral presentations and listens with reasonable attentiveness.

Engages in writing texts with the intention of conveying an idea or message.
Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- use a basic recount text structure
- use action verbs, adverbs, conjunctions and past tense.
