Description of activity
Students write a simple description of an important person or place in their life.
Suggested materials
Paper, pencils
Prior learning
Students have been participating in an HSIE unit, This is Me! which focuses on their backgrounds, past experiences and memories, and important people in their lives. The teacher has modelled descriptive writing and they have jointly constructed a written description. Students have drawn and labelled a picture of an important person or place in their life.
Outcomes
Producing Texts (WES1.9)
Engages in writing texts with the intention of conveying an idea or message.
Grammar and punctuation (WES1.10)
Produces simple texts that show the emergence of the grammar and punctuation needed to achieve the purpose of the text.
Spelling (WES1.11)
Begins to use letters to represent known words when spelling.
Handwriting and computer technology (WES1.12)
Produces most lower-case and upper-case letters and uses computer technology to begin to construct texts.
Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- identify the main features of a person or place
- use detail to help a reader imagine the person or place being described
- use adjectives to describe a person or place
- use lower-case and upper-case letters
- use some grammar and punctuation to convey meaning
- use letters to represent familiar words.
