Description of activity
Students write a factual description of a toy. They view and feel the toy before writing the description.
Variation: Students write a description of an item of food or an object in the classroom.
Suggested materials
Paper, pencils, assortment of toys
Prior learning
Students have been participating in an HSIE unit on toys. They have read factual descriptions and discussed the need to use detailed descriptive language to help the reader imagine what is being described. Students have jointly constructed a factual description.
Outcomes
Producing Texts (WS1.9)
Plans, reviews and produces a small range of simple literary and factual texts for a variety of purposes on familiar topics for known readers.
Grammar and Punctuation (WS1.10)
Produce texts using basic grammatical features and punctuation conventions of the text type.
Spelling (WS1.11)
Uses knowledge of sight words and letter-sound correspondences and a variety of strategies to spell familiar words.
Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
