Engineering Specialised Module 3 - Control System Flow Chart

Grade Work Samples
End of Stage 5 (end of Year 10)
Grade C Jessie

Description of activity

Students will be required to use presentation software to produce a logic flow chart for an alarm system to alert people that a door has been left open.

Context

Students are undertaking the third module in the Engineering Focus Area. They are currently investigating the application of sensors, actuators and digital logic to the operation of simple control devices. Through prior experiences they have developed skills in the use of computer software, including word processing and graphics, to prepare and present reports. In previous lessons students have analysed an automatic opening door at the supermarket to determine the logical operation involved. Methods of constructing flow charts using appropriate software have been demonstrated.

Outcomes

A student:

5.2.1 applies design principles in the modification, development and production of projects

5.2.2 identifies, selects and competently uses a range of hand and machine tools, equipment and processes to produce quality practical projects

5.4.1 selects, applies and interprets a range of suitable communication techniques in the development, planning, production and presentation of ideas and projects

5.5.1 applies and transfers acquired knowledge and skills to subsequent learning experiences in a variety of contexts and projects.

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of control systems and logic
  • use correct symbols and terminology in the flow chart
  • apply Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) skills in the production of the flow chart.
