Timber Major Project

Description of activity

This activity relates to the practical project undertaken by students in the Timber focus area. Students plan, develop and construct a quality practical project.

Context

Students are undertaking Cabinetwork 4, a Specialised Module of the Industrial Technology Timber focus area. Through the study of previous modules they have developed skills in the use of a range of hand and power and machine tools and have an understanding of the properties of timber and the processes involved in the cutting, shaping, joining and finishing of timber.

Outcomes

5.2.1 applies design principles in the modification, development and production of projects
5.2.2 identifies, selects and competently uses a range of hand and machine tools, equipment and processes to produce quality practical projects
5.3.2 selects and uses appropriate materials for specific applications

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • apply design principles in the development and production of a timber product including the selection and use of materials and hardware, and the consideration of function and aesthetics
  • demonstrate quality workmanship through the completed project, including:
    • marking-out and preparation of materials
    • cutting, shaping, joining and finishing
    • selection and use of materials, tools and equipment.
