Foundation Statement strands
The following strands are covered in this activity:
Description of activity
Students select 15 numbers between 1 and 100. They express each of the selected numbers in two different ways using mixed operations, eg 2 = 2 ÷ 2 + 1; 2 = 4 x 1 – 2.
Suggested materials
Paper, pencils, calculators (optional)
Prior learning
Students have calculated solutions to problems involving mixed operations and used formal written algorithms.

Outcomes
Addition and Subtraction (NS3.2)
Selects and applies appropriate strategies for addition and subtraction with counting numbers of any size.
Multiplication and Division (NS3.3)
Selects and applies appropriate strategies for multiplication and division.
Applying Strategies (WMS3.2)
Selects and applies appropriate problem-solving strategies, including technological applications, in undertaking investigations.
Communicating (WMS3.3)
Describes and represents a mathematical situation in a variety of ways using mathematical terminology and some conventions.
Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- use appropriate strategies for addition and subtraction
- use appropriate strategies for multiplication and division
- express numbers in different ways using mixed operations.
