Writing

Description of activity

Students write an explanation of a manufacturing process they have been studying in class, eg how paper is made from woodchips.

Suggested materials

Pens, pencils, paper

Prior learning

Students have been studying an integrated unit incorporating Science and Technology and HSIE. They investigated how people use the environment to satisfy their physical and social needs. Students have learnt how manufacturing processes convert raw materials into consumer products. They have jointly and independently constructed oral and written explanations.

Outcomes

Producing Texts (WS2.9)
Drafts, revises, proofreads and publishes well-structured texts that are more demanding in terms of topic, audience and written language features.
Skills and Strategies (WS2.10)
Produces texts clearly, effectively and accurately, using the sentence structure, grammatical features and punctuation conventions of the text type.
Spelling (WS2.11)
Uses knowledge of letter-sound correspondences, common letter patterns and a range of strategies to spell familiar and unfamiliar words.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • logically sequence information
  • use appropriate language for an explanation
  • explain how a manufacturing process works
  • apply knowledge of spelling conventions and strategies.
