Writing

Description of activity

Students write an explanation about how a torch works.

  1. Students participate in a Science and Technology lesson on electricity and torches.
  2. They make notes and create a point form draft about how a torch works.
  3. Students write an explanation about how a torch works.

Suggested materials

Torches, batteries, paper, pencils/pens

Prior learning

The students have been participating in a Science and Technology unit on Electricity. They are familiar with circuits and conductivity, and have jointly constructed an explanation on another topic.

Outcomes

Producing Texts (WS2.9)
Drafts, revises, proofreads and publishes well-structured texts that are more demanding in terms of topic, audience and written language features.
Skills and Strategies (WS2.10)
Produces texts clearly, effectively and accurately, using the sentence structure, grammatical features and punctuation conventions of the text type.
Spelling (WS2.11)
Uses knowledge of letter-sound correspondences, common letter patterns and a range of strategies to spell familiar and unfamiliar words.
Language Structures and Features (WS2.14)
Discusses how own texts have been structured to achieve their purpose and the grammatical features characteristic of the various text types used.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • logically sequence information
  • use appropriate language for an explanation
  • explain how a torch works
  • apply knowledge of spelling conventions and strategies when attempting to spell words familiar to the topic.
