Worksheet 1
Database Task Sheet
The work is to be done partly in groups but is to be presented individually using PowerPoint, Publisher or a web page in each, with a discussion of why data privacy policies (DPP) are needed. Write in your journal (with no discussion at this stage) what you understand to be the meaning of the terms 'ethics' and 'morals', including at least one example. Then consult with the other members of your group. The group will then decide on a collective definition for the terms - to be included in the presentation. Ask two members of your family what they understand by the terms 'ethics' and 'morals'. Write a suitable definition for each word from what they say and have them read it and confirm what you have written. These are to be included in the presentation in an anonymous way. In your journal describe any way in which your understanding of the terms ethics and morals has been altered. Also add reflections you may have about any effects on you or your family. Using your textbook and the internet, find out as much as you can about data privacy policies (DPP). The group is to come up with reasons why DPP are needed, by discussing features of DPP and by justifying the selection of relevant issues. Include three DPP that you find on the internet from organisations such as the NRMA in your presentation. These are to be referred to when discussing features and justifying the selection of relevant issues, along with your journal entries. Each presentation will include:
- The title.
- A definition for the word 'ethics', after students have written their own definition in their books with an example, and discussed it with class members.
- A definition for the word 'morals', after students have written their own definition in their books with an example, and discussed it with class members.
- Suitable definitions for the words 'ethics' and 'morals', based on students' discussions and agreement with their family members. This is done in an anonymous fashion. Included in this is a statement of whether the student's understanding of the words 'ethics' and 'morals' has changed.
-
Examples of three data privacy policies from internet sites. In the presentation students will discuss the main features, and justify the selection of relevant issues involved. The rest of the presentation is to do with a doctor's surgery:
- List the fields you believe would be needed in the surgery's database. Prepare a data dictionary for the database.
- Name the type of software you would recommend for the surgery's database.
- Name the type of backup you would recommend for the surgery's database.
- Write a data privacy policy for the doctor's surgery. In your policy, you will need to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of any database issues, as well as what constitutes responsible practice and ethical use of information technology. Add these to your journal entries, reflecting on the implications of these issues for your life.
