Foundation Statement strands
The following strands are covered in this activity:
Description of activity
Students make a picture using different-sized paper shapes, including circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. They glue their picture onto paper and add additional features. Students name the shapes that they have used in their pictures and describe how they have been used.
The suggested time for this activity is 30 minutes.
Suggested materials
Blank paper, different-sized paper shapes, glue
Optional: computer drawing program
Prior learning
Students have sorted two-dimensional shapes according to features including size and shape. They have made pictures using attribute blocks and other concrete materials.

Outcomes
Two-dimensional Space (SGES1.2)
Manipulates, sorts and describes representations of two-dimensional shapes
using everyday language
Applying Strategies (WMES1.2)
Uses objects, actions, imagery, technology and/or trial and error to explore
mathematical problems
Communicating (WMES1.3)
Describes mathematical situations using everyday language, actions, materials,
and informal recordings
Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- make a picture using a selection of shapes
- name two-dimensional shapes
- describe how different shapes have been used to make a picture
