Description of activity
Students are placed in small groups with approximately 8 members in each group. Each student selects a card depicting a favourite fruit from a selection of picture cards. Students then gather the selected cards and make a data display. They interpret their data display and pose a question that could be asked about the data.
The suggested time for this activity is 40 minutes.
Suggested materials
Picture cards representing fruit (up to 8 of each fruit per group)
Prior learning
Students have had experience sorting and grouping objects and describing their groups to the class. They have had practice in grouping and regrouping objects, collecting and interpreting information, and posing questions about their data using everyday language.

Whole Numbers (NES1.1)
Counts to 30, and orders, reads and represents numbers in the range 0 to 20
Data (DES1.1)
Represents and interprets data displays made from objects and pictures
Questioning (WMES1.1)
Asks questions that could be explored using mathematics in relation to Early
Stage 1 content
Applying Strategies (WMES1.2)
Uses objects, actions, imagery, technology and/or trial and error to explore
