Guidelines for marking

The following guidelines for marking show one approach to assigning a value to a student’s work. Other approaches may be used that better suit the reporting process of the school. Categories, marks, grades, visual representations or individual comments/notations may be useful.

Range

A student in this range:

High
  • demonstrates an understanding of musical style and the concept of pitch by successfully exploring stylistic features such as Dorian mode, repeated pitch patterns, drones, inverted pitch patterns and canon, and incorporating these successfully into their composition
  • performs this composition displaying part independence and demonstrating a strong sense of working in a musical ensemble.
Satisfactory
  • demonstrates some understanding of musical style and the concept of pitch by exploring stylistic features such as Dorian mode, repeated pitch patterns, drones, inverted pitch patterns and canon
  • performs this composition displaying part independence and some demonstration of a sense of working in a musical ensemble.
Progressing
  • demonstrates a basic understanding of musical style and the concept of pitch
  • performs this composition but may have difficulty displaying part independence and has a limited sense of working in a musical ensemble.

Feedback

Students will be given support throughout the composition process. They will receive oral feedback as their improvisations and compositions progress. Comments will inform them about how they might incorporate stylistic features into their compositions. Students will also receive oral feedback in the rehearsal process in preparation for their class performance.

Students will also receive oral feedback on their performance from the teacher in accordance with the criteria and assessment advice. Self-evaluation will also be a key feature of feedback as students listen and observe how they and other students have described the musical concepts within the task.

Future directions

As a result of this Activity students will have developed their improvising, composing and performing skills. They will have built on their awareness of the concepts of pitch and consolidated their understanding of some of the stylistic features of Medieval music. For the students who have not been able to demonstrate the outcomes at this level, the teacher will be prompted to further explain the task and modify the task to suit the students’ capabilities, while still building on their skills for the next level of achievement.
