Description of Activity

Students complete a listening task based on the song ‘Rock Around The Clock’ using the worksheet provided. They are played the music a number of times and are asked to describe particular musical concepts of the music.

Context

Students have engaged in a unit of work that involves performing, composing and listening activities based on ‘The Origins of Rock’ and ‘Rock Music’ with a focus of African music and the 12-bar blues. As a group, and individually, they have responded to a wide variety of listening repertoire and performed a number of pieces of African, blues and rock origin. Students have been encouraged to incorporate graphic and/or traditional notation into their listening responses to further highlight what they are hearing.

Areas for Assessment

4.7 demonstrates an understanding of the musical concepts through listening, observing, responding, discriminating, analysing, discussing and recording musical ideas
4.8 demonstrates an understanding of musical concepts through aural identification and discussion of the features of a range of repertoire
4.9 demonstrates musical literacy through the use of notation, terminology, and the reading and interpretation of scores used in the music selected for study

Criteria for assessing learning:

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • respond, using appropriate concept-based terminology, to key features of the chosen listening work
  • demonstrate an understanding of musical concepts such as the use of, and changes in, duration, pitch, dynamics and expressive techniques, tone colour, texture and structure
  • analyse the structural features of the piece with possible support from graphic representations.
