Description of activity
Students have completed a composition task using some pitch ideas from Laudemus Virginem Mater Est, eg Dorian mode, repeated pitch patterns, drones, inverted pitch patterns and canon. In small groups, students compose a piece of music of approximately one minute in length that explores these stylistic features, and perform this composition for the class.
Context
Students have been engaged in a unit of work that involves performing, composing and listening activities based on Medieval music. They have aurally analysed the piece Laudemus Virginem Mater Est and have focused on some aspects of pitch found in this piece, for example, the use of Dorian mode, repeated pitch patterns and canon. They have explored these techniques through improvisation and in composition activities.

- perform their group composition demonstrating an awareness of musical style
- explore characteristics of Medieval music and the concept of pitch through experimenting, improvising and composing in this style
- perform their group composition demonstrating both part independence and a sense of working in a musical ensemble.
