Impact of colonisation on Aboriginal peoples in the early years of the Australian colony

Description of activity

  1. Students research the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal peoples in the early years of the Australian colony using the following headings:
    • Initial interactions between British and Aboriginal peoples
    • Different perspectives towards the land
    • Disputes over land
    • Conflict
    • Disease.
  2. Using this information, students prepare an extended response of about 600 words.

Context

Students have learnt about British contact with Aboriginal peoples and have discussed the differing experiences of contact. They are able to locate, select and organise information from a variety of sources.

Outcomes

A student:

4.3 explains the ways Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples have responded to contact with each other
4.9 uses historical terms and concepts in appropriate contexts
4.10 selects and uses appropriate oral, written and other forms, including ICT, to communicate effectively about the past.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • write a response which describes the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal peoples
  • include relevant historical detail using appropriate historical terms and concepts
  • present a well-structured response which addresses the main areas of research.
