Description of activity
- Students work in groups to research an Aboriginal Australian from the list provided, focussing on his/her experices of contact with the British.
- Groups deliver a short presentation to the class, using an overhead transparency or butcher’s paper with notes, a timeline or mind map as a summary/prop.
- While the presentations are being delivered, the class completes the listening sheet provided to record two or three points about each presentation which will provide an overview of the topic.
- Each student writes a 300-word explanation of how and/or why experiences of contact between Aboriginal people and the British were so diverse. In their explanation they must refer to at least three of the people covered in the group presentations.
Context
Students have learnt about Aboriginal culture prior to British colonisation and have compared Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal relationship to land and country.

Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- write a response which explains how and why contact experiences were so diverse
- integrate appropriate information from the group presentations
- demonstrate the features of an explanatory text.
