Description of Activity

Students select a piece of their writing for a life writing competition. They include an evaluation of the merits and appropriateness of the piece of writing in relation to audience, purpose, ideas, style, language forms and features, and textual structure.

Context

Students have critically analysed the context, purpose, values and attitudes, language forms and features, and structures of a key text. They have produced several pieces of writing and have an understanding of the purpose, language features and structures of written persuasive arguments. They are aware of writing for a specified audience.

Outcomes

A student:
4 uses and describes language forms and features, and structures of texts appropriate to different purposes, audiences and contexts
5 makes informed language choices to shape meaning with accuracy, clarity and coherence
7 thinks critically and interpretively about information, ideas and arguments to respond to and compose texts
11 uses, reflects on and assesses individual and collaborative skills for learning

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • understand the relationship between audience, purpose, language choices and form
  • use the features of language to achieve a particular purpose
  • reflect meaningfully their own work and its development
  • accurately use the vocabulary appropriate to a discussion of writing styles and techniques
  • communicate their progress as a writer clearly and effectively.
