Description of activity
Students listen to a reading or taped recording of a narrative text. They listen to the text a second time and write down the significant events. Students listen to the text a third time to check and add to what they have recorded. They use their written notes to create an oral recount of the story and explain the message it conveys.
Prior learning
Students have read a wide range of literary and non-literary texts. They have listened to the teacher reading narrative texts and discussed them as a class. Students have jointly and independently constructed oral and written recounts and explanations.

- gather information by listening to a narrative text
- plan, structure and construct an oral recount of the events in a narrative text
- explain the message conveyed by the narrative text
- speak clearly and convey meaning to others
- use appropriate language features for an oral recount.
