Description of activity
Students prepare and deliver a two-minute oral presentation expressing an opinion on a topic of their choice. Students prepare and practise their oral presentations for delivery in front of the class.
Suggested materials
Examples of effective oral presentations for students to view, note paper, pens/pencils
Prior learning
Students have viewed selected exemplar oral presentations on video. As a class, they have explored what makes an effective oral presentation. They have discussed topics such as appropriate use of voice, formal and informal language, using notes or other visual prompts, using humour and persuasive language.
Outcomes
Talking and Listening (TS2.1)
Communicates in informal and formal classroom activities in school and social situations for an increasing range of purposes on a variety of topics across the curriculum.
Context and Text (TS2.3)
Identifies the effect of purpose and audience on spoken texts and distinguishes between different varieties of English.
Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- describe people, places and things in detail
- justify a point of view with supporting evidence
- use correct word order when making statements or asking questions
- adjust speech to suit familiar situations
- use tone of speech appropriate to audience
- use pause and repetition for effect
