Literary character analysis
There are no Work Samples available for this Activity.
Description of activity
Students write an analysis of two different literary characters. They describe the personality traits of each character, including how they react to events in the story, and analyse each character’s role in the text.
Prior learning
Students have read a wide range of literary and non-literary texts. They have jointly constructed a summary of events for some of these texts and have recommended novels for particular audiences. Students have spent time in class comparing the characters in texts and the importance of their role in the story. Students have discussed themes and issues within literary texts and have jointly constructed character analyses by suggesting criteria for comparing and contrasting characters’ traits.
Outcomes
RS2.5 Reads independently a wide range of texts on increasingly challenging topics and justifies own interpretation of ideas, information and events.
RS2.7 Discusses how writers relate to their readers in different ways, how they create a variety of worlds through language and how they use language to achieve a wide range of purposes.
WS2.9 Drafts, revises, proofreads and publishes well-structured texts that are more demanding in terms of topic, audience and written language features.
WS2.10 Produces texts clearly, effectively and accurately, using the sentence structure, grammatical features and punctuation conventions of the text type.
Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- demonstrate an understanding of characters in a literary text
- analyse the roles of literary characters including the characters’ reactions to events
- use appropriate language features and conventions for a written analysis.
