Foundation Statement strands

The following strands are covered in this activity:

Talking and Listening, Reading

Description of activity

Students are provided with two unfamiliar written texts which they read aloud. They are first given some time to familiarise themselves with the texts. Students answer questions on the texts after they have read each one.

Prior learning

Students have read a wide range of literary and non-literary texts. They have listened to the teacher modelling expressive reading, and have answered comprehension questions based on their reading.

Outcomes

Reading and Viewing Texts (RS2.5)
Reads independently a wide range of texts on increasingly challenging topics and justifies own interpretation of ideas, information and events.
Skills and Strategies (RS2.6)
Uses efficiently an integrated range of skills and strategies when reading and interpreting written texts.
Talking and Listening (TS2.1)
Communicates in informal and formal classroom activities in school and social situations for an increasing range of purposes on a variety of topics.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • demonstrate understanding of written texts
  • read unfamiliar written texts aloud using appropriate expression and emphasis
  • use appropriate strategies to pronounce unfamiliar words or phrases.
