Foundation Statement strands

The following strands are covered in this activity:

Working Mathematically, Measurement and Data

Description of activity

Students conduct a survey and organise, display and interpret the data.

  1. Students conduct a survey to find favourite colour/food/television program among a group of peers.
  2. Students organise the data into a table.
  3. They represent the data in two different graphs and comment on the suitability of each.
  4. Students pose a variety of questions that could be answered using their graphs.

The suggested time allocation for this activity is 60 minutes.

Suggested materials

Blank paper, rulers, pencils/pens, grid paper

Prior learning

Students have had experience in collecting data and the use of tally marks and tables. They have had experience constructing a variety of graphs and are familiar with the language of Data.

Outcomes

Data (DS2.1)
Gathers and organises data, displays data using tables and graphs, and interprets the results
Questioning (WMS2.1)
Asks questions that could be explored using mathematics in relation to Stage 2 content
Applying Strategies (WMS 2.2)
Selects and uses appropriate mental or written strategies, or technology, to solve problems
Communicating (WMS2.3)
Uses appropriate terminology to describe, and symbols to represent, mathematical ideas
Reasoning (WMS2.4)
Checks the accuracy of a statement and explains the reasoning used

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • record data in a table
  • represent survey data in two different graphs
  • pose questions that could be answered using the graphs
  • communicate mathematical ideas
