Foundation Statement strands
The following strands are covered in this activity:
Description of activity
Students investigate how many different four-sided shapes they can construct with a perimeter of 20 centimetres. They record their findings and answer the following questions:
- How did you work out the length of the sides of the first shape?
- How did you find another shape?
- Do you have all possible shapes that have a perimeter of 20 cm? How do you know?
Suggested materials
Paper, pencils, grid paper
Prior learning
Students have estimated, measured, compared and recorded lengths and distances using metres, centimetres and millimetres. They have estimated and measured the area of two-dimensional shapes.
Outcomes
Length (MS3.1)
Selects and uses the appropriate unit and device to measure lengths, distances and perimeters
Applying Strategies (WMS3.2)
Selects and applies appropriate problem-solving strategies, including technological applications, in undertaking investigations
Communicating (WMS3.3)
Describes and represents a mathematical situation in a variety of ways using mathematical terminology and some conventions
Reasoning (WMS3.4)
Gives a valid reason for supporting one possible solution over another
Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- construct a variety of four-sided shapes with a perimeter of 20 centimetres
- describe how the dimensions of shapes were determined
- explain how they verified their results.
