Jo has demonstrated a basic understanding of the structure and features of a procedure. A goal has been included and a scaffolded proforma has been used to order the steps but Jo has not completed the 'What you need' section and the title does not match the text. Two action verbs have been used to begin instructions but several steps have been omitted. There is inconsistent use of capital letters, and a limited range of spelling strategies has been used. To progress further, Jo could include adverbial phrases to add information about the actions. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade D standard midway through Stage 1.

    Students write simple literary and factual texts on familiar topics for known readers by planning and reviewing their writing. They write using basic grammatical features and conventions of punctuation, showing awareness of different purposes, audiences and subject matter. Students spell using knowledge of sight words, letter-sound correspondence and other strategies. They write using letters of consistent size and slope in NSW Foundation Style and use computer technology to produce texts, recognising simple conventions, language and functions.
