Lindsay has demonstrated a sound understanding of successive discounts. The initial sum of money has been well chosen. The calculation is correct but the setting-out could be better. There is a lack of confidence in the response, and there are problems with communicating ideas mathematically, but the conclusions show that Lindsay can generalise. The explanation of mathematical reasoning could be stronger. Some of the working shown is incorrect mathematically and is probably the result of calculator entry steps. The reasons given are unclear, but Lindsay has demonstrated the equality of the two situations and grasped the concept that multiple discounts can be expressed as a product. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade C6 standard at the end of Stage 5.
