Description of activity

Students must decide on some new clothing items to wear to a friend's birthday party. The class has been looking at various clothing catalogues that have been provided by the teacher or that they have found on the internet, and have decided on a certain style that would be suitable for the party. Students will create a promotional flyer. They may use appropriate information and communication technologies (ICT), such as importing images from the internet and word processing, for an imaginary store that has 'the look' they are after. The flyer must include details in French about items for sale that include a description of the clothing, prices and available sizes.

Context

This activity is in the middle of a unit of work that students undertake midway through Stage 5. Students are organising a birthday party for a friend. They have made plans for the party that included sending out invitations and organising what to bring to the party. They have learnt vocabulary relating to clothing and participated in activities that enabled them to internalise structures needed to describe articles of clothing. Students have read clothing catalogues; they now draw on elements from these resources to create their own promotional flyers for particular shops.

Outcomes

A student:

5.MBC.2 identifies and explains aspects of the culture of French-speaking communities in texts.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • convey information and express their own ideas, by:
    • selecting and incorporating particular linguistic structures for a specific purpose
  • demonstrate effective communication in a clear and cohesive text, by:
    • applying grammatical rules and conventions consistently
    • making linguistic choices to enhance intended meaning
  • identify and analyse ways in which culture is reflected in language use by:
    • incorporating aspects of the culture of French-speaking communities, such as prices and sizes.
