Australia and World War 1

There are no Work Samples available for this Activity.

Description of activity

Students examine the experiences of Australian soldiers at Gallipoli and develop an understanding of the development of the Anzac tradition. Using this information, students write in class an extended response of about 250 words in which they answer the question, 'Describe the experiences of Australian soldiers during the Gallipoli campaign and provide supporting evidence.'

Context

Students have learnt about Australia's involvement in World War 1, particularly the Gallipoli campaign. They have an understanding of the reasons for Australia's involvement and how it is regarded by many as a defining event in Australia's history. They have learnt to use appropriate historical sources.

Outcomes

A student:
5.2 assesses the impact of international events and relationships on Australia's history
5.6 uses sources appropriately in an historical inquiry
5.8 locates, selects and organises relevant historical information from a number of sources, including ICT, to undertake historical inquiry
5.9 uses historical terms and concepts in appropriate contexts
5.10 selects and uses appropriate oral, written and other forms, including ICT, to communicate effectively about the past for different audiences

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • describe the experiences of soldiers in the Gallipoli campaign
  • provide evidence to support their answer
  • present a well-structured response that uses historical terms and concepts accurately.
