Foundation Statement strands
The following strands are covered in this activity:
Description of activity
- Students look at and discuss a simple sketch of their school identifying key buildings and places.
- They recognise 2D shapes used in the sketch to represent 3D objects in the environment.
- Students discuss which 3D blocks they will need to use to make a simple model of the school.
- They construct a 3D model of the school using blocks or lego.
- Students take a digital photograph of their 3D model (optional).
- They make a drawing of their model.
- Students give an oral or written description of the position of key buildings and places within the school by using everyday language such as ‘left’ and ‘right’.
Suggested materials
Blocks, paper, pencils, digital camera (optional)
Prior learning
Students have identified, named and compared 2D shapes. They have made simple models and sketches of their models. They have used positional language such as ‘left’ and ‘right’ to describe the relative location of objects. They have described, named and sorted 3D objects. They have explored and discussed their school environment.
Outcomes
Three-dimensional Space (SGS1.1)
Sorts, describes and represents three-dimensional objects including cones, cubes, cylinders, spheres and prisms, and recognises them in pictures and the environment.
Two-dimensional Space (SGS1.2)
Manipulates, sorts, represents, describes and explores various two-dimensional shapes.
Position (SGS1.3)
Represents the position of objects using models and drawings and describes using everyday language.
Applying Strategies (WMS1.2)
Uses objects, diagrams, imagery and technology to explore mathematical problems.
Communicating (WMS1.3)
Describes mathematical situations and methods using everyday and some mathematical language, actions, materials, diagrams and symbols.
Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- construct a 3D model of their school
- sketch and label a 2D diagram of a 3D model
- record and describe the position of objects.
