Description of activity
Students construct a graph using the symbols provided and interpret the information presented.
The teacher presents the following scenario:
‘Karim went to the beach with his family last weekend. They walked along the shore and explored the rock pools. They saw many living things.’
- Teacher displays a set of pictures on an overhead projector or as a large chart to show what Karim and his family saw at the beach.
- Using this information, students construct a graph using a symbol to represent each animal.
- Students use their graph to predict what they might see if they were to visit the same beach the following weekend.
The suggested time allocation for this activity is 60 minutes.

Scissors, glue, paper, pencils, crayons

Prior learning
Students have sorted objects into groups and rows, organised the groups to aid comparison and compared groups by counting. They have collected information and organised it into a data display, then interpreted the information in the display to answer questions. Students have practised posing questions and using the language of chance when interpreting data.
