Description of activity
Students make a lino cut of a classmate's face and produce a print.
- Students view a range of portraits, such as Archibald Prize entries, and discuss how portraits can express the person’s inner feelings, personality, moods, culture, hobbies etc
- Students view and discuss lino and wood block prints by artists such as Margaret Preston and Hokusai. They focus on the positive and negative (black and white) - ie what is taken away and what is left.
- Students use a black and white outline print of a head shot photograph to trace their face onto the lino.
- They go over the lines on the lino, adding features to highlight the personality of their model.
Suggested materials
Portraits, lino and wood cut prints, photographs of student’s heads (black and white outline prints of these), pencils, scissors, gloves, safety boards
Prior learning
Students have been participating in a unit on identity. They have been introduced to the concept of portraits and have been taught how to use tracing skills. Students have discussed the techniques and range of tools that can be used to produce a lino cut. They have been instructed in how to safely undertake lino cutting including wearing a glove on the hand that is not cutting, using a safety board and cutting away from their body.

Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their:
- manipulation of and experimentation with different lino cutting and printing techniques
- representation of the features and personality of their model using a variety of lines, shapes, patterns and textures.
