Description of activity
Students create artworks using collage, based on the theme of making music.
- Students observe and draw musical instruments, experimenting with different drawing and painting materials.
- They select parts of their drawings to photocopy and enlarge.
- Students reorganise these images into a new composition, showing different viewpoints in the one picture.
- They select collage materials to apply to the work, as well as colour to create their intended effect.
Suggested materials
Musical instruments, artworks featuring musical instruments, soft drawing pencils, charcoal, graphite, felt pens, conte and water-soluble pencils, art paper, acrylic paint, inks, dyes, brushes, scissors, adhesive, fabrics, patterned papers.
Options: photocopies of music scores
Prior learning
Students have been investigating how sound is made on a variety of musical instruments in Science and Technology. They have also viewed and discussed the works of artists who have used musical instruments as subject matter. The students have been introduced to works by the Cubist artists, Picasso and Braque.

Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their:
- investigation of a range of drawing, painting and collage techniques
- representation of the subject matter of musical instruments, from different viewpoints, including lines, shapes, colours, patterns and textures.
