Making Number Patterns - Jules : Grade Commentary
Jules has demonstrated an adequate level of competence in creating, continuing and describing number patterns. Simple number patterns have been created and some mathematical language has been used to describe them but no generalisations about number relationships have been made. To develop further, Jules could create more complex increasing and decreasing patterns, and provide better mathematical descriptions. A pattern that counts between the multiples could also have been used to answer Question 4. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade C standard midway through Stage 1.
Grade C
The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills.

Foundation Statement strands
The following strands are covered in this activity:
- Working Mathematically
Students ask questions and use objects, diagrams and technology to explore mathematical problems. They link mathematical ideas and use everyday language, some mathematical language and diagrams to explain how answers were obtained. - Patterns and Algebra
Students describe, create and continue a variety of number patterns and relate addition and subtraction facts to at least 20.
