Ainsley has demonstrated a high level of competence in using a range of artistic techniques to create a portrait. A conventional approach to portraiture has been used to communicate a view of two sitters in a static pose. A thorough understanding of Hockneyesque style is evident in the ideas expressed about the evocative quality of photographs as a form of memory and mode of representation. A variety of brushstrokes have been used to render the figures and the landscape, and there is some use of tonal modelling to suggest volume and consistent light direction. A sense of character is communicated but the faces are stark and lack the refinement of tone that is evident in other areas of the work. The background is flat and the figures appear isolated and disconnected. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard.
