Lou has been successful in locating and using recycled materials and debris, with a clear understanding of their symbolism and the intention of the work. The sculpture symbolises the concept of city in decline - deconstruction, fragmentation, haphazardness. The work is spatially interesting, the positive and negative shapes and a machine-like presence provides the audience with areas to explore and interpret. There is an interesting merging of block-like shapes with wire, which connects with the nails and screws. Over-gluing may be a deliberate decision - a sense of waste and refuse - or it may have been experimental in construction, being built over time with several experiments. The addition of the fish shapes invites discovery and interpretation. The surface patina connects with the concepts of decline, the nails and screws assist in the totemic presence with the plinth, which can be considered part of the sculpture. The relationship between the plinth and the totemic figure could be further considered and explored. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard.
