Riley's work is consistently well printed, uses a variety of grid sizes, and explores printmaking conventions with a variety of cutting and printing techniques. The work demonstrates an investigation of spatial qualities and compositional devices to suggest aspects of the city. Repetition, juxtaposed vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines suggest the height and dominance of buildings in the city and symbolise utopian and mechanical concepts of the city. The printmaking techniques are sophisticated and restrained - key block printing and an ability to experiment with chine collé. The gradation of colour from light to dark references Japanese woodblock prints. The moon/sun creates an emphasis and point of contrast with the strong verticals of the cityscape - a natural counterpoint to the built environment. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard.
