Description of activity
Undertake fieldwork and complete a Research Action Plan (RAP) on a selected geographical issue (coastal management) affecting Australian environments in a local context.
Complete Steps 6–8 of the RAP.
These steps are to be completed individually at home after the excursion.
Step 6 - Process and analyse the data collected.
Step 7 - Select presentation methods to communicate the research findings effectively.
Step 8 - Propose individual or group action in response to the research findings and, where appropriate, take such action.
Context
In class, students have been learning about geographical issues on Australia’s coast and how they can be managed sustainably. They are now required to analyse the findings from the fieldwork at a beach and make recommendations for improved management strategies. An overview of coastal management will be taught as part of class work. Fieldwork techniques, data collection and presentation methods will be discussed in class.
Research Action Plan: the steps completed so far (Steps 1–5) in class and during the excursion to a beach.
Step 1: Identify the aim/purpose of the investigation.
Step 2: Generate a number of focus questions to be addressed by the investigation.
Step 3: Decide which primary and secondary data are needed to answer the focus questions.
Step 4: Identify the techniques that will be used to collect the data.
Step 5: Collect primary and secondary data.
