Description of activity

Students develop questions and interview a person from an Arabic-speaking background who has moved to Australia. They write a transcript of the interview or a short biography in Arabic of this person’s life and experiences based on the information provided in the interview.

Context

Students have been learning about lifestyles, cultures and traditions of Australia and Arabic-speaking communities. They have read personal recounts of people who migrated from an Arabic-speaking country to Australia. The students discussed the benefits and challenges facing immigrants. They know how to include appropriate linguistic structures when formulating questions to members of the Arabic-speaking communities to display appropriate intercultural behaviour.

Outcomes

A student:
5.UL.1 selects, summarises and analyses information and ideas in spoken texts and responds appropriately
5.UL.3 uses Arabic by incorporating diverse structures and features to express own ideas
5.UL.4 experiments with linguistic patterns and structures in Arabic to convey information and to express own ideas
5.MBC.2 identifies and explains aspects of the culture of Arabic-speaking communities in texts.

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)
Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • gather information about the person who has migrated to Australia
  • compare aspects of Australian and Arabic cultures
  • convey information and express ideas by selecting and incorporating appropriate linguistic structures in the transcript of the interview or a brief biography
  • demonstrate effective communication by applying grammatical rules and conventions and use the conventions of the Arabic writing system.
