Description of activity
Students will establish a pot culture designed trial to investigate the effects of phosphorus and nitrogen on plant growth. Students will record and observe plant responses over 10 weeks and graph the results.
Context
Students have been completing a plant enterprise. Throughout this unit they learn the important management strategies for successful and productive pasture production. They become familiar with OHS and are aware of hazards associated with fertiliser use. Students are familiar with the need to use safe operating procedures when measuring and mixing fertilisers for this pot trial.
Areas for Assessment
Outcomes
5.5.1 designs, undertakes, analyses and evaluates experiments and investigates problems in agricultural contexts
5.5.2 collects and analyses agricultural data and communicates results using a range of technologies
5.6.1 applies Occupational Health and Safety requirements when using, maintaining and storing chemicals, tools and agricultural machinery
5.6.2 performs plant and animal management practices safely and in cooperation with others
Criteria for assessing learning
(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- determine the results and draw conclusions
- research nutrient deficiency symptoms of plants
- compile a report that communicates the trial assessment.
