Description of Activity

Students research, assess and present information on the Murray Grey breed and one other cattle breed as part of their agricultural enterprise on beef cattle production. A worksheet is provided for students to use.

Context

This unit on beef cattle production builds on students’ knowledge of agriculture and production systems and covers the content relating to production and management of beef cattle. In this unit, students have identified and assessed various cattle breeds and discussed the effects of climate on beef production. As part of this unit relevant State and Commonwealth legislation, regulations and standards, including OHS and animal welfare guidelines have been studied and complied with. Appropriate notification, certification, permission, permits and licences have been applied for and granted.

Outcomes

A student:
5.1.1 explains why identified plant species and animal breeds have been used in agricultural enterprises and developed for the Australian environment and/or markets
5.3.4 explains and evaluates the impact of management decisions on animal production enterprises
5.6.2 performs plant and animal management practices safely and in cooperation with others

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • collect information from a number of secondary sources
  • research the Murray Grey breed
  • identify and research another breed of cattle
  • analyse and discuss the relevant information.
