Description of activity
Students prepare a report on current software and hardware that could be used in a typical doctor’s surgery. They also make recommendations for any updates for future developments. The software could include ways to electronically transfer patient information to and from the hospital(s) or specialists, adoption of wireless technologies within the practice, email facilities for transmission of test results, video or web access for the doctor to hospital systems for training or offsite data backup systems. Other applications may be included after discussions with the teacher. In their reports students also discuss any implications this new technology will have on people. This activity integrates core content relating to data handling with the database design option.
Context
Students have been introduced to the concepts of ethics, morals, privacy and security. Students have an understanding of the legal and ethical issues that relate to databases and data storage. They have identified some current and emerging technologies related to database access and storage. Using a variety of resources, students have researched and analysed individual and societal reactions to these information and software technologies, and they have analysed these reactions.

Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- identify current and emerging technologies specifically for hardware and software in this situation
- analyse the effect that these technologies will have on the privacy and security of personal data
- show a range of source material, and reference this appropriately in a bibliography
- use appropriate language and format for the report.
