Indra has demonstrated a basic understanding of the features of a letter to the editor. There is evidence of an ability to engage with factual texts, to generalise and make inferential statements, and to apply ideas in a new context. Some awareness of form has been demonstrated but Indra has not shown full control of register and sentence structures. An awareness of audience and purpose is lacking. There is some evidence of a developing ability to use an appropriate register and language features, eg rhetorical questions and appropriate opening and closing statements. There are difficulties with spelling and appropriate language choice – eg the use of emotive language – and these limit the persuasive capacity, and thus the effectiveness of, the response. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade D standard at the end of Stage 5.
