Drew has demonstrated a very high level of competence in using painting techniques and the conventions of portraiture to create a self-portrait with pet. An ambitious pose has been chosen, indicating experimentation with the traditions and conventions of self-portrait. The artwork is an accomplished representation that has been thoughtfully cropped and shows an awareness of the work of Hester, Hanrahan and Perceval. Extensive understanding of the relationship between artwork and audience is shown by the placement of the figure, gaze of the subject and oblique view of the parrot. Sophisticated manipulation of the design qualities reinforces knowledge of conventions in painting such as washes, underpainting, sfumato, complementary colour and high key tones. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard.
