Taylor has demonstrated a very high level of competence in using a range of ceramic techniques to create a three-dimensional portrait in clay. This contemplative artwork shows a strong understanding of proportion and evidence of investigation of a range of artworks from historical and contemporary sources. Taylor has constructed a realistic, smooth-surfaced head, demonstrating a very high level of control in the manipulation of materials and tools. There is refined modelling in the construction of the face and restrained use of red oxide and glaze. Informed choices have been made regarding the placement of the inscription and sensitive use of pattern work. The handbuilding is technically proficient and relief is used to add effective contrast to the burnished form of the sculpture. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard.
