A Migrant's Story - Structured Report - Chris (Grade C)
End of Stage 5 (end of Year 10)
was born in the country of Sri Lanka, where she spent many years living and studying there. She liked Sri Lanka very much with its diverse lifestyle and warm climate.
There was soon a time though where she had to leave Sri Lanka and move abroad to another country, with Sri Lanka at this time having many civil difficulties and other internal problems. The country that she chose to move to along with the rest of her family was Australia. She felt somewhat compfortable moving to Australia since she had many family members there which have been living there for years. Their opinions on the country was good, and this made it a lot more emotionally compfortable moving to this certain country. What made it even more compfortable moving to Australia was that she was lightly surrounded by some people from Australia at a young age with some members from her family marrying Australians, and people from other countries. This also meant that being surrounded by Australians in a new country would not be all that difficult and new.
Moving down to Australia by plane took a long 10 hours from Sri Lanka. This was a tough long trip mentally and physically with many emotions going through mind at this time. She had left her original birthplace country to start, practically a whole new life all over again. During the trip there was a stop at Singapore, this was a chance to regather her emotions and thoughts about moving to a whole new country.
Once she landed on Australian soil, the first city she lived in Australia was Brisbane.
Her first impressions and thoughts about th ecountry and that certain city was that, the people were friendly and that the country was quite large. The climate was a lot cooler compared to Sri Lanka but she knew that she would soon be acustomed to it. But still at this time she didn’t quite know what to expect.
One thing she did notice though was the differences of Sri Lanka and Australia.
The weather was fairly different but had a similar sort of climate at the same time, with both countries being warm. There was also a major difference in clothes, with Australians wearing more casual clothing. The food was also vastly different and easier to make, and awfully a lot cooler than the foods was used to eating.
The lifestyle was also different with the Australian way of life being more hectic and busy. And where you had to work a lot more and harder.
After getting acustomed to the Australian way of life, and her family decided to leave Brisbane and settle down in Sydney simply because there were more job opportunities there and more variable career areas which interested.
She also thought there was a mild but significant difference between the 2 cities in Australia. She thought that people in Sydney were more multicultural and were used to foreigners, where else people in Brisbane had a more traditional perspective in their outlook. She also enjoyed the people in Sydney and found Brisbane more of a holiday environment, with its tropical foods and palm trees.
does feel very much so comfortable being a migrant in Australia. What helped her to be so comfortable was that she was used to multiculturalism from a young age with many Dutch, British, Scottish and Australian in the family. She also had many family members living here at the time and made a lot of friends rather quickly, some through them.
If had a choice of going back to Sri Lanka or staying in Australia her decision would be to stay in Australia.
Many of her close line family is living here including her children, and there is many, many more job opportunities here to make a good living out of, especially considering her children in mind.
Her parents have also passed away back in Sri Lanka so which also means there is no real reason to go back even to visit. But she considers going back there for a visit in the future to go back to her original birthplace to see how things are going.
But she remains an Australian Citizen, being extremely comfortable about living in Australia and visiting its various cities.
