Foundation Statement strands

The following strands are covered in this activity:

Working Mathematically, Measurement and Data, Number

Description of activity

Students are placed in small groups with approximately 8 members in each group. Each student selects a card depicting a favourite fruit from a selection of picture cards. Students then gather the selected cards and make a data display. They interpret their data display and pose a question that could be asked about the data.

The suggested time for this activity is 40 minutes.

Suggested materials

Picture cards representing fruit (up to 8 of each fruit per group)

Prior learning

Students have had experience sorting and grouping objects and describing their groups to the class. They have had practice in grouping and regrouping objects, collecting and interpreting information, and posing questions about their data using everyday language.

Outcomes

Whole Numbers (NES1.1)
Counts to 30, and orders, reads and represents numbers in the range 0 to 20
Data (DES1.1)
Represents and interprets data displays made from objects and pictures
Questioning (WMES1.1)
Asks questions that could be explored using mathematics in relation to Early Stage 1 content
Applying Strategies (WMES1.2)
Uses objects, actions, imagery, technology and/or trial and error to explore mathematical problems

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • sort pictures of objects into groups
  • make a data display using pictures of objects
  • interpret data presented in a data display
  • pose a question that could be asked about a data display

NB There is a worksheet for this activity.
