Description of activity

Students choose five objects of different length from things found in the classroom. They compare the lengths of the objects. Students demonstrate or explain how the lengths of the objects were compared and draw a picture to record their results.

The suggested time for this activity is 30 minutes.

Prior learning

Students have had experience comparing the lengths of objects and using appropriate everyday language (eg short, shorter than, longer than, the same as, wide, tall, thin). They have had practice comparing lengths directly by placing objects side-by-side and aligning the ends. Students have traced objects and recorded their findings informally.
