Guidelines for marking

The following guidelines for marking show one approach to assigning a value to a student's work. Other approaches may be used that better suit the reporting process of the school. Categories, marks, grades, visual representations or individual comments/notations may all be useful.

Range A student in this range:

9-12

High

  • demonstrates the ability to independently use search engines to identify relevant websites
  • independently selects, downloads and prints relevant information/data from the internet
  • presents relevant information in a spreadsheet with agreed fields logically structured and organised

5-8

Satisfactory

  • demonstrates the ability to use key words or phrases to independently search the internet
  • with peer support, selects, downloads and prints information/data from the internet
  • presents relevant information/data in a spreadsheet with agreed fields

1-4

Progressing

  • with teacher assistance, uses provided key words or phrases to search the internet
  • with teacher assistance, selects, downloads and prints information/data from the internet
  • with assistance presents information in a spreadsheet with agreed fields

Feedback

During the Activity peer feedback and teacher feedback will be given on using search engines to search, select, download and print appropriate information from the internet. Oral and written teacher feedback will also be provided to students specifically after their initial attempt at designing the fields for a spreadsheet. The teacher comments focus on things such as:

  • types of fields to be used
  • names of fields
  • priority ordering of the fields in the spreadsheet.

At the conclusion of the Activity, written teacher feedback will include:

  • presentation format of spreadsheet
  • further improvements in the logical sequencing of the agreed fields.

Future directions

Students develop an electronic file for data/information collection. Using the shared list of identified websites, students gather data and information for inclusion in a spreadsheet file. They collate information collected from individual class members and, with teacher guidance, construct a database that is composed of information on Australian earthquakes.
